This is WKND, a new family retreat opportunity at New Creation UMC! WKND (pronounced "weekend") will be an exciting weekend away for the whole family to worship and grow in their faith together while enjoying a weekend together lakeside in Piedmont Virginia! Families will explore a Bible story through rotating stations, games, family devotional time, and worship. Saturday afternoon will include unstructured family free time; available free time activities will include canoeing, kayaking, or paddle-boating on the lake and an indoor bouldering wall. Saturday evening will include worship, storytelling, and smores around a bonfire. Before saying goodbye on Sunday morning, we will complete a family mission project and share worship one more time.

Travel Information

Families are responsible for their own transportation to and from the retreat center.

The address for Westview on the James is 1231 West View Rd., Goochland, VA 23063. Without traffic, the trip to the retreat center is approximately 2 hours long, 130 miles from New Creation.

Lodging/Rooming Information

Lodging is provided in dormitory-style cabins called “Hogans” with a centralized bathhouse, and are located in the center of camp under the canopy of a hardwood forest. Each Hogan has 18-20 bunk beds (mattresses provided only). Families will share lodging with approximately four other families. We will assign families to each Hogan based on space, needs, and our Safe Sanctuary guidelines.

Families should plan clothing for the weekend, blankets/sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and toiletries.

Safe Sanctuaries

During worship and rotation sessions, the Hogans are off-limits. If you do need to return to the Hogans during the day for diaper changes or other family emergencies, please notify our retreat staff. Children must be accompanied by their parents at all times.

General Schedule (mealtimes, quiet times, family times)

We will serve breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8:00 am until 9:00 am. Saturday’s Lunch is served at noon. Dinner on Saturday night is served at 5:30 pm followed by snack time and desserts. All meals are served at Lakeside Lodge.

We will end Friday and Saturday evenings with a time of Family Devotion at 9:00 pm. Devotions should be shared with your family; families that share a Hogan are encouraged to share the devotion with each other!

Quiet Time will begin at 9:30 pm Friday and Saturday night. Families may retire for the evening to the Hogans at the family’s discretion at the end of the evening’s activities. During Quiet Time, we ask that all campers keep noise to a minimum on Hogan Hill. Quiet Time will end at 7:30 am on Saturday and Sunday.

Available Activities for Family Free Time Saturday

There is a 3–hour period of “family free time” available Saturday afternoon. Families are welcome to bring activities to share with other families. We will provide frisbees, corn hole, and additional games. The Westview Retreat will make canoeing, kayaking, and paddle-boating on the lake available if weather permits. The indoor bouldering wall at the Hogan Hill Shelter will also be open during Family Free Time. This time may also be used by families with older children to prepare for the evening’s storytelling and drama session.
